Inside this edition

Start small, then follow the crossings

A short answer can do a surprising amount of work in a compact crossword. This edition mixes news-linked names and places with familiar vocabulary, so you can start with a word you know and work outward. The opening three-letter entry offers a useful example: its clues move between two everyday settings. Elsewhere, a country name gives you a chance to compare a news reference with a geographical description. You can use either route into the same grid.

Look for the kind of answer requested

The Easy clue asks for a country; Medium describes a Himalayan nation. Those words tell you what sort of answer belongs in the five squares. A location in the news can also be approached through geography.
