How to solve a news crossword when you missed the headlines
Use familiar words, crossing letters, and a change of clue difficulty to find your way into a current-events crossword.
A name you don’t recognise can make a news crossword feel like a quiz you forgot to study for. Leave that entry for a moment. In NewsWords, recent reporting shares the grid with ordinary vocabulary, and the crossings let those two kinds of knowledge help each other.
The examples below come from the published September 7, 2026 edition. Answers stay hidden until you choose to reveal them.
1. Start with a clue you can explain.
Scan for something concrete: an everyday object, a short definition, or a familiar expression. Say your proposed answer back against the clue. If the connection makes sense and the word has the right length, you have a useful starting point. If it feels forced, leave it tentative.
2. Let the crossings do some of the work.

The five-letter Across clue is “Hard to please”. A Down answer starts in its second square, with the clue “Of the city”.
Solve the Down clue first and you get a letter to test in the Across answer.

URBAN supplies the U. “Hard to please” is FUSSY, which fits both the definition and that second letter. One checked letter does not prove an answer, but it gives your next guess a useful constraint.
Now apply the same approach to the unfamiliar entry. A crossing might fix its first letter, distinguish two spellings, or rule out a name that is too long. Fill what you know and revisit what you don’t. A guess that breaks several convincing crossings deserves another look.
3. Ask the same question another way.
Changing difficulty keeps the answer and your existing letters. It can also change which piece of knowledge the clue calls on. Compare these three versions of a four-letter entry:

Reveal the answer and explanation
HEMP
HEMP fits every version. You could reach it from knowledge of plant fibres without remembering the article. The word “traditional” in the Medium clue also steers you toward an established use.
Easy does not mean familiar to every person, and Hard does not require you to struggle. Try another level when a different description would be more useful.
4. Choose the kind of help you want.
A hint gives a nudge. Check tells you about the letters you have entered; Reveal supplies an answer more directly. Check and Reveal mark your solve as assisted. There is no need to guess randomly to avoid using them.
